Yes, 19 years old. doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun!
August 10th saw us conclude our 19th year in business, quite a feat in these difficult climes. The uncertainty of the B-word (are we in or are we out?), and the general turmoil around the world of economics, triggering currency fluctuations not seen for over a decade, makes reaching out for that crystal ball seem the only way to plan into the future!
The realisation that we are yet another year closer to drawing that pension brings us down to earth with a bang. 41 years and still counting! I never anticipated being in freight forwarding – in fact I wanted to be in banking. But because I didn’t expect to pass my English O-level, despite being on the brighter side with mathematics, the banks didn’t want me. Shame, if they’d have focused on mathematics instead of English….
Nevertheless, it is a rewarding business to be involved in, and I am thankful for it. The variety that each day brings, often quite unexpected, presents a great challenge. The quantity, and moreover the quality of knowledge which needs to be absorbed can be grossly underestimated. To many it isn’t just a job, its a vocation, a religion almost. It gets inside you and it’s darn hard to shake it off.
But let’s not forget, no matter how much knowledge and experience one has, if it wasn’t for our long suffering loyal clients, our excellent partners and suppliers, and moreover a great team of colleagues who put up with me year on year, it would no doubt be a different story.
Tough times ahead, so let’s get on with it – together!
